001 / RESEARCH-FIRST / NIGERIA

A small beginning.
A big ambition for African research.

Sevenbitlabs is a new, founder-led research venture in Nigeria. We are here to ask better questions, build useful technology, and grow into the kind of research institution Africa deserves.

002 / Why we started

This is an ambition in its first chapter.

Sevenbitlabs started with one conviction: Africa should not only use technology built elsewhere. We should help shape the questions, knowledge, and inventions that move the world forward.

We are new, and we are still building. Right now that means choosing the problems we want to study, meeting people who know them deeply, and laying honest foundations for the work ahead.

“I want to build a place where ambitious African ideas are taken seriously.”

003 / Research domains

Six directions we want to explore.

These are not departments or completed programmes. They are the areas where we believe careful research could make a real difference.

  1. 01Artificial Intelligence for Local ContextsAI that understands more of our languages, our institutions, and the way people actually live and work here.View domain
  2. 02Infrastructure TechnologyDigital systems that remain useful when power, connectivity, money, or all three are limited.View domain
  3. 03Education TechnologyLearning tools built around real African classrooms, not an ideal classroom with perfect internet and one device per student.View domain
  4. 04Health TechnologyCareful uses of data and technology for health systems working with limited staff, equipment, and local evidence.View domain
  5. 05Agritech and Food SystemsPractical ways to use data and technology without overlooking the knowledge farmers already have.View domain
  6. 06Energy Systems and SustainabilityMore reliable, affordable energy for cities and rural communities, with a fairer path to getting there.View domain

004 / Our principles

The kind of lab we want to become.

01

Ethical Research

People matter more than a clever result. We want dignity, privacy, safety, and shared benefit built into the work from the start.

Read our approach

02

Open Collaboration

Good ideas grow when people can question them and build on them. We plan to share our work whenever it is safe and responsible to do so.

03

Long-Term Thinking

We are interested in work that gives Africa more knowledge, more capability, and more choices over time.

005 / Research to impact

From a good question to something useful.

  1. 01

    Ask

Start with a real problem and the people who understand it best.

  2. 02

    Study

Gather evidence, test assumptions, and be honest about what we do not know.

  3. 03

    Build

Turn useful findings into tools, datasets, models, or early prototypes.

  4. 04

    Test

Try the work in the real world, carefully and with the right partners.

  5. 05

    Share

Publish what worked, what did not, and what others can build on.

006 / Selected research

There is no portfolio to show you yet.

Sevenbitlabs has just begun. When we have work worth sharing, this is where you will find it.

PUBLIC INDEX / IN PREPARATION

We would rather show an honest empty page than pretend.

There are no papers, grand partnerships, or impact numbers yet. We are at the beginning, defining the work and looking for thoughtful people who may want to help shape it.

007 / Collaboration

The right people can help shape this from the start.

01

Universities

Bring together people who know different parts of the same problem and grow more research capacity here.

02

Startups and Industry

Turn good evidence into useful tools and test technology where it will actually be used.

03

Governments and NGOs

Build evidence that can make public services, policy, and infrastructure work better for people.

04

Global Research Networks

Work on questions that cross borders without treating Africa as a source of data or an afterthought.

008 / Governance + ethics

We will earn trust by being honest about where we are.

Our charter describes the standards we want Sevenbitlabs to live by: careful research, honest reporting, reproducible work, and independent ethical oversight.

Where things stand

We do not have a Research Ethics Board in operation yet. It is part of the institution we intend to build, and we will not claim it exists before the people, rules, and accountability are in place.

009 / AFRICAN RESEARCH ETHOS

We are starting small, but the ambition is not small.
